Making the Move

Be sure that you call the utility and energy companies well in advance of your move, and be sure that you don’t forget the Wi-Fi and cable TV! Sometimes there might be a wait for installation at the new place, and the last thing that you want is to be without your essential services for long. Deposits may be required before services can be connected at your new home. Also be sure that you notify the United States Postal Service (USPS) no less than two weeks prior to the move to ensure delivery of all of your mail.

FYI:

Telephone service is provided through Verizon Wireless. Contact the Southern California Gas company for gas hookups and the Southern California Edison for electricity. Cox Cable and Verizon provide internet services to residents. Visit their respective website or call them by phone to arrange your services.

Getting Around Town

If you are without a vehicle or looking for more environmentally-friendly transportation options for local trips, the city has several choices available. This includes taxi cabs and a city bus service. Bicycling is also popular around the city, and special lanes for bicycles are provided on public highways.

For longer trips there is a Greyhound bus station available in town. The Santa Barbara Airport is also provided for the convenience of travelers visiting and returning from locations around the world. There are specific trips/dates/times for these services, so be sure to learn this information before attempting to use the services.

Other Important Information

  • If you own an animal over four months of age, it must be registered with the city. Only residents who have been in the area 30 days or longer can register their pet, however. This rule applies to cats as well as dogs.
  • Several public libraries are located in the area. A free membership card is available to all residents with ID and proof of address needed. With this card, members can check out books, DVDs, eBooks and more for a period of up to two weeks.
  • In the state of California, auto insurance is required to be carried at all times on any registered vehicle in the state. The minimum amounts set forth in the state include $15.000 in Bodily Injury coverage with a $30,000 cap for all injuries, and $5,000 for personal property damage. If you do not want to purchase auto insurance, a security bond of $35,000 can be placed with the state.
  • If you plan to open a business in the city, the proper licenses and permits must first be obtained. There are fees associated with these licenses and permits, and it can take a bit of time to get them.

Newspapers in Santa Barbara

Ian Filippini Santa Barbara loves the news. It is always nice to have a heads – up of what is going on in the community where he operates his company, Filippini Wealth Management, and the city that he loves to call his own. There are a few ways that Mr. Filippini –and the rest of the world –can learn the latest news, and that includes with the local newspapers. The Filippini Wealth management Inc. agency receives their paper each day, and you can be sure that Ian Filippini Santa Barbara is reading from cover to finish.

The Newspapers in SB

Santa Barbara has two newspapers (yes, you will find both on the coffee table at Filippini Wealth Management Inc.) Those papers are the Santa Barbara Independent and the Santa Barbara News Press. The offices to these papers are both located in the downtown area of the city. Which paper is most popular? Well, that is pretty hard to determine, since they both have high readership volume, as well as online versions that are easily accessible from your computer, mobile device or other electronical means.

The News Press

The News Press was originally brought out by T.M. Storke. The paper has been serving the community with the latest news in the city for the past 60 years, and is the leading newspaper even today. The paper prides itself on reporting all of the latest news in a timely and accurate fashion. Each newspaper features color photos and well written information. Online and print versions of the paper can be accessed, and the daily paper has all of the latest news, events and more.

The Independent

The SB Independent newspaper has a motto of ‘Who. What. Now.’ The paper announces local news, breaking stories and entertainment news. This paper is not as old and established as The News Press, however, it has been around for 25 years already.   There is a calendar of events included in the paper so that you can plan what you want to do for the weekend. The entertainment portion of the newspaper is the biggest difference between the two papers, and the Independent focuses more attention on this area than the News Press. The Independent has an online news site as well.

Other Sources of News in Santa Barbara

The SB Daily Sound is another paper available in the city. It is published five days per week, and inside of the pages you will find all of the latest local news around. They also have an online paper for your convenience, and of course pages with social media sites such as Facebook.

The Montecito Journal is another paper that you can pick up to learn the latest and greatest about Santa Barbara. This paper focuses its attention on news that is taking place in the Montecito area of town, and you will find news, information, events and more inside.

Family Life Magazine is not a newspaper, however, it is a publication that is very much worthy of your time. The magazine focuses on families that reside in the city of Santa Barbara, and each monthly issue is packed to the brim with news for parents of children of all ages.    Whether you are looking for something to do in the city, have questions about raising your child or need information about schools, this is the magazine to turn to for accurate information.

Choosing your Paper

Which paper will you pick up in the morning? Well, the answer to that question really depends on the type of news that you are looking for. If you want to know more about the city and the things that are taking place, it is probably the Independent that is best suited for your needs. When it is actual, factual news that you need, The News Press is unbeatable. But, both papers are very affordable, so why not read them both? You will find sections in each paper that is worth your time. And, of course, you cannot leave out all of the other great papers that you can find available in the city. No matter what kind of news you want, there is a paper in the city that is ready to give it to you.

Ian Filippini Santa Barbara

Ian Filippini Santa Barbara

Ian Filippini was born in Walnut Creek, California. When he was a couple of years old his family moved to Pebble Beach where he was raised. Ian Filippini attended Forrest Grove Elementary School in Pacific Grove, California.

When Ian Filippini was younger he enjoyed playing many sports including baseball, soccer, golf, and football. Unfortunately he wasn’t very athletic. Ian’s favorite position in baseball was catcher but his favorite sport growing up was golf – probably because he started playing Pebble Beach at a very young age.

One of Ian Filippini’s favorite events growing up every year was the AT&T National Pro Am (http://www.attpbgolf.com/) where he was able to meet many celebrities such as Jack Lemmon and the world’s best golfers like Mark O’Meara. As part of the AT&T National Pro Am, AT&T provided complimentary lessons and rounds at the best courses in Pebble Beach to all of the resident children.

Ian Filippini developed a strong passion for computers and technology at the young age of 8. It was this passion combined with his love of history that drove him to begin making documentaries at the age of 13. His documentaries included topics such as hate group’s use of the internet to spread their message to America’s youth which placed at the Monterey County History Day.

One of Ian Filippini’s documentaries received an award from the Constitutional Rights Foundation. The Foundation asked Ian Filippini to show his documentary at their Annual Spring Dinner, a must-attend dinner for the Los Angeles legal elite and government leaders.  This annual event has drawn some of the most inspirational and powerful speakers in American including Vice-President Al Gore; U.S. Supreme Court Justices William Brennan, Abe Fortas, and Antonin Scalia; Rudolf Giuliani; Chief Justice of California Malcom Lucas; Senators George McGovern and Birch Bayh; Governor of Kansas Kathleen Sebelius; Chief of Police William Bratton; Walter Dellinger; Alan Dershowitz; Erwin Chemerinksy; Kathleen Sullivan; Michael Crichton; Michael Beschloss; David Halberstam; Doris Kerns Goodwin; Frank McCourt; David McCullough; Tom Brokaw; Art Buchwald; Jack Nelson; Andy Rooney; and Mike Wallace.

The Constitutional Rights Foundation asked that Ian present a speech at the end of the showing of his documentary. While reluctant to agree to speak given the average audience size in excess of 1,000 attendees Ian Filippini, still a teenager, was graciously counseled and encouraged by that year’s keynote speaker, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Halberstam, known for his many successful works such as The Fifties. It was a life changing experience that showed Ian the incredible power of education through public speaking.

His most successful documentary, “Fascisti o No?” caught the attention of a group of Italian Americans and was used in their efforts to obtain a Day of Remembrance from the California House of Representatives for Italian Internment during World War II. He was asked to provide a private screening to the then Speaker of the California State Assembly, Antonio Villaraigosa, now mayor of Los Angeles.

By Ian Filippini

Hello, my name is Ian Filippini.  All the time people ask me, “what kind of name is Filippini”?  Besides being nearly impossible to spell correctly? Filipino? From the Philippines?  Only one of those three.

A search on the Ellis Island Registry (http://www.ellisisland.org/ – very cool website!)   The name Filippini is predominately Swiss Italian.  While Filippini sounds like a rare name to most Americans it is actually very popular in many parts of Italy.  In fact, Filippini is so popular that there is a street named Filippini!  (Via Dei Filippini – http://www.info.roma.it/strade_dettaglio.asp?ID_indirizzi=148)

via_dei_filippini

Interestingly enough that photo of Via Dei Filippini (Filippini Street) actually looks a lot like what the Filippini household looked like with so many Italian babies running around!  Sounds like that would be the first street where they would have more trouble spelling the first part of Ian Filippini.

There are many misspellings of Filippini including Fillipini, Fillippini, Filipini, Fillipine, Philippini, Phillipini, Phillippini and others.  Almost as many misspellings as Ian Filippini.

One of the first Filippini’s to settle in the United States was Johannes Filipipi who came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1750.  Others included John Fillipelli, who arrived in New York, NY in 1896, Frank and Annie Fillipello who arrived in Louisiana in the early 1900’s.

Winning the award for most famous Filippini is St. Lucy Filippini (Yes Saint) January 13, 1672 – March 25, 1732.  At an early age, Saint Lucy Filippini was orphaned after the death of her parents.  Saint Lucy Filippini then lived with her aristrocratic aunt and uncle who were paramount in Saint Lucy Filippini’s interest in religion and the good that it can bring.

While receiving her education at Santa Lucia by the Benedictine nuns Saint Lucy Filippini was given the responsibility by Cardinal Gregorio Barbarigo to begin founding schools for young women, especially the impoverished.  With the help of Rose Venerini training school teachers, Saint Lucy Filippini co-founded the Pious Matrons, a group that continued the efforts of educating girls.  The vast curriculum included embroidering, Christian doctrine, reading, arts, and weaving.  Saint Lucy Filippini created an impressive 52 (fifty-two) schools in total and was eventually given notice by Pope Clement XI who asked her to work in Rome before she passed away of breast cancer in 1732.

Today, the efforts of Saint Lucy Filippini continue through the Institure of the Religious Teachers Filippini (http://www.filippiniusa.org/ – Not to be confused with Filippini Financial Group, Inc. http://www.filippiniusa.com/) based in New Jersey.  If only they had schools in Santa Barbara – I probably wouldn’t have lost the run for Class President.

Thanks for following my blog!
